More than 20 million Americans suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), experienced by many as chronic heartburn. Medication offers short-term relief for some sufferers of this disease. For those seeking a non-prescription alternative, a magnetic device, currently being evaluated at UC San Diego Medical Center, may provide a long-term solution.

The device, called the LINX Reflux Management System, is being studied at UC San Diego Medical Center as part of a US and European multicenter clinical trial. Santiago Horgan, MD, director of minimally invasive surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center, is the site's principal investigator.

"The goal of this clinical trial is to correct a defect in the lower esophagus so that the body can function naturally without pain or discomfort," said Horgan, a national expert in laparoscopic and scarless surgical techniques.

NASA 4-Year collaborative study on the efficay of electromagnetic

fields to stimulate growth and repair in mammalian tissues

This advanced technology, invented at NASA, employs a carefully designed sequence of magnetic pulses programmed to provide a Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field (PEMF) around a volume of tissue that is experiencing pain or to assist in the healing process. This biomedical device is designed to safely promote healing in muscle, tendon, ligament, skin, and bone tissues. These tissues make up more than 75% of the weight of the body of animals and humans, and it is often in one or more of these tissues that debilitating injury and pain need to be corrected. Our technology is unique in many respects because it is based upon the physics of electricity and magnetism as well as the physiology of cells and tissues. The MagnaVet device is a Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) device intended to be used by a pet owner in a home environment after prescription from a qualified veterinarian. The device is intended to safely and effectively promote healing in hard and soft tissue injury and chronic disease states, including, but not limited to, long bone fracture, tendon, ligament, and cartilage injury, and osteoarthritis. PEMF has been demonstrated to reduce localized swelling, induce cell proliferation and extracellular matrix deposition, and promote healing.

The Magnavet is NOT FOR HUMAN USE. The MagnaVet device is intended to safely and effectively promote healing in hard and soft tissue injury and chronic disease states, including, but not limited to, long bone fracture, tendon, ligament, and cartilage injury, and osteoarthritis in pets. It is only available by prescription from a qualified veterinarian, and is expressly not intended to treat food or food-producing animals.
