The healing properties of the Magnavet unit follow research conducted by NASA, Dr. Rudd, and Dr. Dennis. Dr. David Wolf (M.D., electrical engineer, astronaut), Dr. Robert Dennis, Professor at University of North Carolina, Chappel Hill, and Dr. Donnie Rudd, former Chief Scientist of a biotech company, are the inventors.
Research originally began at NASA for the purpose of expanding adult (not embryonic) stem cells. On earth, attempts to expand stem cells in a flask were unsuccessful because the cells are adherent and will stick to the sides of the flask and die.
Since the research was being sponsored at NASA, the inventors devised a test to see if the cells would expand (grow) better in space, on a shuttle flight, in near zero gravity so they would float and not adhere to the sides of the container. The test was very successful.
The inventors then looked at ways to duplicate the results on earth. The result was a rotating bioreactor that rotated in a manner that kept the cells in the center of a rotating container and simulated zero gravity so the cells would not touch the sides of the container.
